A Form W-2 scam that made its way across the country last year has returned this tax season. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has issued a statement alerting payroll and human resources professionals to be wary of phishing emails that spoof a company’s executive officer’s email. Through these spoof emails, cybercriminals have become extremely sophisticated in their ability to impersonate an official within an organization. HR professionals should be wary of requests for employee information like Social Security numbers, dates of birth, names, addresses and salaries.
