U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) released a new I-9 form on November 14, 2016, that may be used immediately, although the previous version remains valid until January 21, 2017. The fillable PDF format of the new I-9 was created to help reduce errors, but it should not be confused or substituted for the electronic I-9. The I-9 must still be printed, signed, re-verified and retained for the appropriate time period. Current employees do not need to be re-verified with the new form.
The digital version of this form provides prompts to ensure information is entered correctly including validating the number of digits in Social Security numbers and dates as well as providing drop-down lists and calendar options. On-screen instructions are available for each field and full instructions can be easily accessed. Changes in instructions for employees completing the form have also been made.
These adjustments and instructions are an attempt to reduce errors and penalties in the case of a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (USICE) audit. The new form is 19 pages whereas the previous form was 9. The form can be downloaded at https://www.uscis.gov/i-9.
